It is impossible to avoid the suspicion that historical Jesus research is a very safe place to do theology and call it history, to do autobiography and call it biography.

About This Quote

A professor at the University of Virginia recently published a book called, “The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant.” In this book, he claims that the historical Jesus did not have the expected characteristics of a divine being. Instead, he is portrayed as a man with a semi-divine nature. In other words, Professor Ehrman's research has shown that the Christ figure of Christianity is a mythological character based on a real person who may have lived around the same time that Jesus did.
